Need a Florist? Look no further.....

We have found a great website listing all the Altrincham Florists and Altrincham Flower Delivery companies. They also have details of similar Florists in Timperley and Hale.

There are plenty of directories and local listing websites with Florist Listings, but this one is the most comprehensive and up to date of all the ones we found.

Visit www.AltrinchamFlorist.co.uk to find out more.

The House Wine Bar - Review

The House Wine Bar is a new venue located in the quite backwater called Goose Green. For those that don't know where Goose Green is, you can find it by walking from the New Apollo Cinema past Fitness First over the bridge. It can also be accessed on foot from Stamford New Road, oopposite "The Place" bar.

Goose Green is a sleepy square surrounded by restaurants, boutiques and specialist shops. The House Wine Bar recently opened in the Square, next to The House Restaurant.

After a fantastic Steak dinner at The Brasserie, I decided to take my better half off the beaten track to visit The House Wine Bar after seeing it on Onionring. We had gone into Classroom for a drink, but walked out after about 30 seconds due to the choking smoke cloud stopping us from seeing each other!

At 10pm The House Wine Bar was fairly quiet, however the lack of smoke and comfortable furniture drew us in. The barman was very attentive and friendly and produced some very good cocktails including a Long Island Ice Tea with a secret twist. Certainly the best I have tasted, if a bit strong! Fair play to him, he let me have the remainder of the coke bottle to top up the cocktail to suit.

The best bit came soon after arriving when a pianist took his place behind an electric piano in the corner. He played a wide range of music from Beatles to Oasis to Elton John to Frank Sinatra, all of it note perfect and very entertaining.

We were told that they have live music on a Saturday too, I can only assume it would be just as good.

I would certainly recommend this bar for a nice break from the norm. If we lived closer I am sure I would find myself becoming a regular!

She said YES! I can now recommend a Jeweller

It has been a while since I last posted, but a lot has happened to us in the past month.

I proposed to Kelly while visiting London and she said YES. Since then we have been pre-occupied with wedding planning!

I can recommend M&M Plant Jewellers to anyone thinking of buying jewellery of any kind. The husband and wife owners are very helpful, very understanding and will give you a good deal. The personal touch is very much lacking in todays retail environment with the advent of the internet, however these guys know about customer service. Little touches like free cleaning and polishing whenever you pop in, make it worth using a local jewellers.

Church and Reception are now booked for May 2008 so we can hopefully relax for a while!

Back to Altrinchamlife development very soon!

Easter Weekend - best for 20 years

What a shame the Easter Weekend had to end on a wet note.

After three days of amazing sunshine we get April showers! Overall it has been the hottest Easter on record for 20 years, so not bad at all.

We managed to enjoy the garden for the first time this year and then spent most of today (Bank Holiday Monday) drinking with friends in a local pub, enjoying our last day of freedom before we have to go back to work.

On an altrincham life note, we are in the process of setting up the new Altrincham Life Directory which will be a free to use, business and local service directory with options to upgrade your listing for a small annual fee. We intend to populate the directory with as many local businesses as possible, but encourage users to update or add their own businesses and services.

Still to come, we will also offer a self service Classifieds System which will allow you to sell your things, from small items to houses all in one place and all local to you. We will keep you informed of the progress and eventual launch of this service. In the meantime you can use the Forum to sell anything you want (keep it clean folks!).

Anyway, back to the grind stone. Looking forward to the May bank holidays!

Is Frank Timperley's Most Famous?

Frank Sidebottom, the Timperley enigma has always been a mystery to me!

I am aware of him, in fact his big head is very familiar, but I had no idea until today how famous he is and how well connected this Timperley resident is.

Having Stumbled upon Frank's MySpace Page whilst browsing Altrincham related sites, I was intrigued to find out how popular he is, his MySpace friends include Ramones, Fall Out Boy, Dannii Minogue and Badly Drawn Boy. In Frank's latest blog he talks about Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) joining him on stage in New York! New York! (So good they named it twice!)

Now maybe Frank was just before my time, or I have just never taken notice but his Biography is pretty impressive and he has his own TV show on the M Channel, and all masterminded from Frank HQ in Timperley!
So, we all know that plenty of soap stars and footballers live in Altrincham and surrounding areas, but "Is Frank Sidebottom Timperley's most famous resident?"

Please feel free to comment and let me know if you think so, or if you know of someone more famous!

Information on Frank can be found at these websites:

Altrincham McDonalds Closes after 23 years

For those of you that didn't know McDonalds, formerly located on Stamford New Road in Altrincham closed its doors on 31st March 2007 after 23 years of trading!

Full Story from the Messenger

A spokeswoman for McDonald's said the decision was 'due to changes in demand' and 'the franchise is just not as busy as it once was'.

If I am being totally honest, from a restaurant point of view I couldn't give a monkeys if McDonalds closes, however, I am concerned about what this says about Altrincham Town Centre and the future.

I bet the developers currently working on new shops in George Street are concerned. If you look along Stamford New Road today you see a lot of closed down shops and other businesses, even the Post Office shut down and got into bed with WH Smith on George Street.
Many have commented that Altrincham Town Centre was hit hard by the Trafford Centre, but come on, that was a long long time ago, the town should have found it's feet by now. In fact, on a more postitive note the town centre (and by that I mean George Street) was buzzing last Saturday when I took this photo.
Lets hope that McDonalds is replaced by something more healthy, it must be a good prospect for someone with all that passing trade from the Metrolink.

MySpace - Even Yianni's got a page

As part of the altrinchamlife.co.uk network I want to create a MySpace page, all the cool kids have one and I think altrinchamlife should be no different!

But no, however I try to sign up for an account I get the same error message...

"We’re sorry. Based on the information you have submitted to us, you are ineligible to register on MySpace.com"

How on earth has MySpace become the giant that it is today when ordinary people can't even create an account. The only conclusion I can come to is that I am too old for MySpace and by putting in my real date of birth I have set all sorts of alarms off at MySpace HQ which is clearly run my teenagers!

Whilst venting my frustration with MySpace I did come across some altrincham related pages, including the one and only Yianni, my Barber! Yanni is a legend in his own Barbers Shop and is one of life's true characters. I could easily spend all day in his shop putting the world to rights and sorting out the latest political, social or car related issue. He has an opinion on absolutely everything, sometimes even your hair! I will never forget the first time I ventured into Yianni's Shop and the legend himself looked at my hair in puzzled disbelief. I thought he was thinking "you've let it get a bit long" but when I asked him if that's what he was thinking he replied quite clearly, "no what I was thinking was WHAT THE F*CK HAPPENED TO YOU!". I won't bore you with the details, but suffice to say, he knows his stuff when it comes to hair, cars, politics, bad jokes and how to entertain! You can find Yianni on Hale Road, here is a picture of his shop.

What was a rant about rubbish MySpace, turned into an advert for Yianni's, funny how blogs go!

Altrincham Shopping - New Next Store

The Altrincham Town Centre Redevelopment on George St has completed the first phase with the opening of a new Next Store opposite the old store in the heart of the pedestrianised shopping zone.

The new store opened it's doors in March 2007 with a striking dobule height glass atrium (a style which appears to be continued throughout the new development).

It is certainly hoped that this new development, which is rumored to also include a Debenhams Department Store, will revitalise this end of the shopping precinct and attract more shoppers not only to the new stores but the existing ones too.

We will provide further updates as this development reaches it's conclusion. Also check the shopping pages on altrinchamlife.co.uk for more information on shopping in Altrincham.

Altrincham Ice Rink - A Success?

What a success the new Ice Rink appears to be. It might not have been completed on time, causing the Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Team some scheduling issues, but following my attempted visit last Saturday (31st March) I would say it is a definate hit with Altrincham Residents.

I say "attempted" visit because I couldn't park! The place was so busy there was no space in the car park and even if I had found one I wouldn't have got past the long queue to gain access!

I will wait until the novelty wears off a bit and return for a closer look, but I won't be getting on the ice! My knees aren't made for ice skating, roller blading or sking - in fact they just about hold me up (but that in another story!)

As for the name, "Silver Blades", it's not great but then again nobody is going to call it that! It will be known as the Altrincham Ice Rink or Ice Dome so don't know why they bothered!

Check out the Altrinchamlife Sport Pages for details of opening times and other useful information.
